I can’t think of a more
Dr Susan B Neuman, education policy maker and Professor of Literacy Education, NYU
enjoyable way to learn.
Hello and how nice you stopped by. Here’s where you can find out a bit about me and about my new children’s book, The B on Your Thumb. You can also see videos of the rhymes in action. I’m chuffed to announce (drum roll) that The B has been selected for National Poetry Day.
About
The B on Your Thumb is clever, engaging, educational and fun. I wish I had thought of it. I can’t wait to read it to my daughter.
Craig Smith, author/song writer of The Wonky Donkey
This is a book where words like to play,
where letters get cross when they don’t get their way.
There are sounds to make and jokes to uncover.
An owl in your bowl, for you to discover.
You’ll find out about how Q met U,
and when to write to or two or too.
There’s a K on your knee, who’s ready for fun
And don’t be alarmed by the B on your thumb!
A lovely, loony look at language!
Michelle Robinson, author of the best-selling ‘Goodnight’ series
Colette Hiller’s poems are a pedagogical gift.
Timothy Shanahan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois and government policy advisor on literacy education
Joyful reading lessons– with a phonological lift.
Every page is as colourful as a jar of sweets and every rhyme is accessible.
Brian Patten, award-winning poet and author
This collection of rhymes will help 3 – 7 year-olds learn to read and spell. They’ve been trialled in front rooms, school rooms and on BBC TV‘s Words and Pictures. But this book does more than boost literacy. It introduces wordplay, sparks imagination and most of all – it aims to instil a love of the English language.

A riotous introduction to the quirky world of the English language.
The B on Your Thumb
is your number-one chum –
a magical spell for excelling.
The rhymes are a riot,
so come on and try it –
you’ll soon be a wizard at spelling.
Colette Hiller
I started off as a dancer at NY’s High School of Performing Arts and came to London with the original production of Annie. I spent many years on the London stage, before joining The BBC where I worked as a producer. For the past ten years, I’ve produced cultural projects across the world, filling city streets with public pianos, ping pong tables and Talking Statues. I’ve also written a best selling children’s CD – Applehead – a story with songs. The B is my first book. If your child has a favourite rhyme from The B, I’d love to know! Do pop me an email or video and show or tell me.
